France encourages exchanging old cars for electric bicycles with a financial incentive.

The French government is offering owners of old cars the opportunity to scrap them in exchange for a subsidy to buy an electric bicycle.

The incentive plan has just been approved in the first ballot in the French parliament, and the value of the subsidy can reach up to 2,500 euros. A measure that gains strength due to the pandemic, to encourage people to use less polluting means of transport.

With this achievement France will become the first country in the world to offer people the chance to exchange a vehicle for an electric bicycle. An idea that came about through the French activist and law idealist Olivier Scheneider’s of the French Federation of Bicycle Users (FUB) which for the first time was recognized that the solution is not to make cars greener, but simply to reduce their quantity.

This “irresistible” incentive is based on reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40% in 2030 from the 1990 levels.
